Outfit of the Week// The Secret to Getting Amazing Deals on Outerwear

Last year, I bought 4 coats. 4. Winter. Coats. ON MY TEACHING SALARY. Then I figured out the secret to getting my coat fix without causing the banking app on my phone to turn red and send me warning notifications for two months straight. Outerwear is a bit of a pricey investment, you know? But I really love a good winter coat, and I hate being cold, so that’s even further incentive. Here’s the secret: you gotta shop right now. Yes, now. In February. This fuzzy friend (linked below!) from Gap for a fraction of the price ($70, if I’m remembering correctly). And since …

Please Stop Telling Us to Get Married. (and what to say when people do)

At my sister’s wedding when I was 20, a well-meaning friend of my mom’s insisted on knowing when I was going to get married. I was just just trying to sneak some icing off the cake, you know? Also, and again, I was 20. When I was about to move to Boston, I ran into one of my old teachers at Starbucks. I told her about my moving plans, and she looked concerned. She asked how long I planned to be there, and I replied that I wasn’t sure, I was just kind of going with it. “Wouldn’t you rather get married …

Treat Yo Self: 5 Happy Things To Do On Valentine’s Day

I have weirdly horrible Valentine’s Day luck, and I can prove it. Valentine’s Day 2002: Love-of-my-life (aka Sam) gives pink carnation to Megan, and not to me. I die of a broken heart right there, in the 6th grade lunch line. Valentine’s Day 2004: I get friend-zoned by none other than Sam’s BROTHER. Valentine’s Day 2006: Salmonella. Valentine’s Day 2007: Car accident en route to date. Valentine’s Day 2010: Forced to refuse a delivery of 200 red roses from maniacal ex-boyfriend. Burnt the mac n’ cheese. Valentine’s Day 2014: I didn’t get the job. Ran off the stress on treadmill for too …

How I Wrote My First Book (Finally!)

Picture me, dancing around in my basement (ahem, alone) and singing “Timber” at the top of my lungs at 1 o’clock in the morning. That’s where the story ends, but certainly not where it began! But it did end there: the night I typed the last sentence of what would later be known as my very first novel. I was all by myself and wearing a still slightly-damp swimsuit underneath a pair of LuLu shorts and t-shirt. It was the happiest night of my life. Weird, huh? I’ve talked about my wild journey with writing here and here, but I thought that …

Outfit of the Week// How to Wear All-Black

All-black is a chic look, but it takes a little extra thought if you don’t want to end up looking like Wednesday Addams. Here’s a few things to keep in mind: Choose statement jewelry in either silver or gold. I would avoid a bright color, because it will detract from the all-black wow factor. This is mine, and it’s on sale! Go for a simple, but interesting, silhouette. This sweater and skinny jeans combo isn’t loud, but the oversize fit of the sweater in contrast with the skinny  jeans gives it an interesting shape. Make sure your blacks aren’t faded! I’m pretty sparing …

Blog Chat: Party of Sarah is One Month Old!

Writing this post is surreal in more than a few ways. Like I’ve mentioned here and here, it took a long time for my blogging dream to become a reality, so to sit here and reflect on my first full month as a blogger is surreal, but oh so wonderful, too. My first month as a blogger came with many surprises, and many lessons learned! I’ll outline some of them for you, as well as my stats for this month (which totally blew my mind). Why am I telling you this? Because you’re part of the party, and this is no fun …

Outfit of the Week// Winter Bohemian

Do you have an Altar’d State where you live? We got one in Tulsa a few years ago, and it’s my go-to spot when I want to add something to my closet that has a bohemian vibe. I wouldn’t describe my style as bohemian necessarily, but I like it’s airy vibe so I do like to incorporate it every now and again. Like this dress (similar here) that’s sweet but not over the top. This one was actually gifted to me from a sweet friend who bought it at Altar’d State and then accidentally shrunk it…right to my 5’1 size! It’s too …

5 Ways That Perfectionism is Ruining Your Life

I was 22 before I figured out that I was a raving lunatic perfectionist. I had been this way for so long that I thought everyone thought the way that I did, and some people were just better at life than I was. I had no idea. You would think since being a perfectionist was literally ruining my life that I would, you know, have noticed that I was one. But oh, I was. Here’s how I knew: I gave myself absolutely no grace, about anything, ever. I rarely described my days as being “good!” when people asked. I was always tired. …

5 Amazing ‘Single Girl’ Recipes

I define ‘Single Girl’ recipes as follows: Takes no more than 30 minutes to make, from start to finish. (But honestly, 15 minutes is more like it!) Only makes enough for one person, but can easily be multiplied for leftovers, dinner buddies, or if you have a boy that lives in your house that needs to eat too. Requires minimal prep. Aka….easy clean-up. Not unhealthy, per say, but also not a salad. Doesn’t need to have 3 side dishes to go with it to make it a meal. If you’re anything like me, you know that it’s so easy to resort to …

Outfit of the Week// Athleisure for Less

The athleisure trend evaded me for the longest time. When I was a nanny in Boston I was constantly surrounded by moms in Lulu leggings, Patagonia quarter-zips, and Hunter boots. And I just didn’t get it. Why would you spend that much money on an outfit that wasn’t, like, a real outfit. You know? I remember at the time thinking that if there were a way to get the athleisure look for less, then I could maybe buy into it. But for the time being, it just wasn’t on my financial radar. (Ahem, it still isn’t.) The following year I was teaching dance …
