The Truth About LuLaRoe (from someone who doesn’t sell it!)

The first time I was added to a LuLaRoe group I thought I had been invited to some weird baby shower.

I rubbed my sleepy eyes (it was 6am) and took a sip of my ginger peach tea before I clicked through to see (literally) the most colorful leggings I had ever seen in my entire life. Like, ever. (If you know anything about LuLaRoe, then you know what I’m talking about.)

Fast forward to this dress, which LulaRoe calls the “Carly”, that ended up being my first garment from this company. It’s pretty cute, no?

If you’ve not familiar, LulaRoe is a direct sales company that specializes in clothing (think Mary Kay or Rodan + Fields, but clothes instead of skin care). They have a limited number of styles but each style comes in hundreds of patterns and fabrics. That’s the gist of it.

Earlier this year I talked to you about the truth about LipSense, because it can be really tough to figure out whether direct sales products are actually worth the hype, or the price. Because several people have reached out to me about LuLaRoe, here’s the truth from someone who DOESN’T sell it!

Yes, some of the fabrics/patterns are pretty crazy.

The first time I saw a pair of LuLa leggings, they had fish on them.

Like, fishies.

And I was totally turned off by that. BUT, that’s not all there is. There are a lot of quieter patterns and solids, like my dress. I promise!

Yes, it’s all as comfortable as they say it is.

This company has done a great job of creating extremely comfortable clothes. The leggings are as “buttery soft” as they promise, and the dress and skirt that I have are also noticeably more comfortable than anything else that I own. The hype is real!

No, you don’t need to build your entire wardrobe out of it.

If you look around Pinterest, you’ll see a lot of LuLaRoe capsule wardrobes and stories from women who claim to have built their entire wardrobe out of LuLaRoe. My thoughts on that are this: if you build your wardrobe out of ANY one clothing line, it’s going to be noticeable, and I don’t recommend that unless you can’t love anything else as much. If that’s your jam, then do you.

For the rest of us, I assure you that you can buy some LuLa without being encouraged to have it become your entire closet. Some of the capsule ideas are really out there (like, you don’t need to use your pencil skirt as a scarf, or your leggings as a shrug, for crying out loud). Don’t let that turn you off.

Yes, the quality is worth the price.

I know a bit about garment construction, and the first thing I noticed when I got this “Carly” in the mail was how well constructed it was. It has gone on several joy rides through the washer and dryer and still looks new, which is worth the price in my opinion. The leggings have done well too, though I have not worn/washed them a ton of times yet. I received a “Nicole” dress and it was quite long-waisted on me, so it would be one that probably wouldn’t be worth the price in the future for me since it requires some outfit finagling. But it’s also very good quality!

Yes, it’s a really great company. And you should support the women who are selling it!

I have done a lot of research on this company and have been impressed. They have a super positive vibe and present a really solid opportunity for women to participate in this business. Whether or not you can become a millionaire from a direct sales business is another subject entirely, but here’s what I’ll tell you: the women in my life who sell it look like are having so much fun. I can’t help but want to support them!

My Carly came from my best friend’s mom, who started selling earlier this year. She retired from a career in hospitality and is now working out of her own “boutique” in her home. I am so proud of her, and of all the fun she’s having. You can shop with her here. I have another pal who is a mama of two perfect twin girls, running this business out of her home while wrangling her littles and full-time job. She’s awesome. If you’re a Tulsa girl and want to shop local, you can visit her here.

I’ll be honest, a lot of direct sales companies feel a bit sleazy to me. I won’t call anyone out, but I bet you know what I mean. LuLaRoe is the opposite of that. They seem to really care about empowering their consultants and I love that. If you have a LuLa girl in your life, I would encourage you to check out their stock.

Hope this helps! All photos from the best, Kailey Watson.
